Giving 26 Commercial Breeder Rescues the Gift of a New Beginning

North Shore Animal League America recently embarked on a lifesaving mission in collaboration with partner National Mill Dog Rescue; driving our Mobile Rescue Unit to Missouri to pick up 26 small breed dogs who were saved from Midwest commercial breeding facilities. The dogs traveling to our Port Washington, NY campus included breeds such as Maltese, Dachshunds, Labradoodles, Pomeranians and Shih Tzus. What set this rescue apart was the higher number of puppies and younger canines compared to previous commercial breeding rescues.

“These dogs could have been discarded,” said Animal League America Senior Rescue Manager Karla Scaramuzzo, “but now they are safe and on their way to finding loving families.”

Though young, the recent arrivals were all still clearly in need of our care. Dirty and matted, each one will emerge transformed after their thorough grooming. Additionally, the dogs all receive comprehensive medical and behavior evaluations, and any subsequent treatment they may require.

Ted Moriates, Animal League America Rescue Team Leader, has logged hundreds of hours driving to rescue dogs from commercial breeders, and the gravity of the moment when they arrive to our campus is never lost on him. Now under our care, the dogs will only know nurturing hands until the day they find their new family. “We’ve returned with 26 beautiful souls,” Ted remarked. “As we step into the New Year, let’s usher these precious pups into homes filled with love and comfort.”

Opening your heart to one of these remarkable companions is not just finding a pet — it’s adding a new best friend and cherished family member to your life. We expect all the dogs and puppies will be ready for adoption by this weekend, and we are hoping each and every one will find their home for the holidays and beyond.
