Answering the Call:
Animal League America’s Swift Response
to Back-to-Back Hurricanes
When Hurricane Helene unleashed its fury across the southern United States, and Hurricane Milton coming in quickly behind, our Emergency Rescue Team answered the call for help. With our shelter partners in the region already overburdened, the urgency to make room for animals displaced by these storms was critical. Our team hit the road to bring as many animals as we could to safety.

Celebrating 80 Years Leading the No-Kill Community
2012: Emergency Rescue Team Responds Close to Home
For years our Emergency Rescue Team has been quick to respond when disasters strike. In 2005, we were one of the first on site to aid shelter partners hit by Hurricane Katrina, and again in 2008 when Gustav and Ike hit the Gulf Coast. But it all came very close to home when Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast of the United States in 2012. While dealing with the aftermath at our own shelter on the north shore of Long Island, we set up an emergency animal shelter on south shore at Mitchel Field in Nassau County, NY, where we housed over 400 animals that were displaced when their owners had to evacuate their homes.
