Throughout our 78-year history, we have been a no-kill facility.
Our rescue missions do not stop in the face of challenges, and during 2021 our lifesaving work reached animals in need locally, nationally, and internationally. In all, 922 dogs, 586 cats, 1,574 puppies, and 440 kittens were brought to the safety of our Port Washington, NY campus.
Our Emergency Rescue team began working with the Louisiana-based Paws4Life organization during the 2020 hurricane season. Since then, our partnership has saved the lives of 2,229 dogs and cats.
Volunteers play a crucial role in our success and are essential to completing the journey of our rescue animals from hopeless to happy and healthy. In 2021, 424 volunteers donated a total of 39,192 hours of service to our mission.
In a single year, our medical staff performed 43,000 exams, 4,900 spay/neuter procedures, and administered 47,000 vaccines. The Freed Special Recovery Center treated more than 1,000 animals suffering from extremely dangerous conditions, requiring a total of 12,000 days of hospitalization. Dental care is critical to keeping pets healthy, and in our state-of-the-art Marvin Fried Dental Suite, we performed 656 dental procedures throughout 2021.
Since 2019, Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center has provided a natural, cage-free environment where cats and kittens—rescued from all kinds of backgrounds including hoarding situations—can acclimate. The cat-centric atmosphere enables cats to become
North Shore Animal League America is a world leader in setting best practices and facilitating the best matches possible for homeless animals and their adopters.
In 2021, we found homes for more than 6,000 pets from our Adoption Centers in Long Island and upstate New York and facilitated over 50,000 adoptions around the country working with our network of over 2,000 shelter partners.
Our North Country Initiative Adirondack Cat Adoption Center (NCI) in Warren County, NY is making a significant impact on the lives of homeless felines in the Adirondack region. NCI has helped more than 2,800 felines find loving homes since 2015 and continues to reduce the overpopulation and suffering of feral cats through its community spay/neuter programs.
The Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum program reaches across the U.S. and Canada with newly emerging student involvement in Bosnia, Croatia, and Morocco. The Curriculum bridges humane education with social emotional learning. With a focus on the plight of homeless animals and the importance of pet adoption, it builds kindness and empathy in the next generation.
Throughout 2021, we offered monthly webinars for educators led by subject matter experts. Students participated in virtual shelter tours and educational sessions with shelter professionals, authors, and of course, adoptable animals. Dozens of students were Mutt-i-grees Student Ambassadors leading projects in communities across the country and abroad. In a growing number of schools, School Dogs impacted school life, learning, attendance, and behavior in positive ways.
