Meet Dempsey

After 12 years in the only home he ever knew, Dempsey came to North Shore Animal League America because his owners were overwhelmed by his medical issues

At our Pet Health Centers, he was diagnosed with hyperthyroid disease and asthma. Both conditions require medication. Dempsey also underwent two surgeries to repair entropion. Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid fold inwards, causing significant irritation and discomfort. This elder statesman recovered well and has a happy-go-lucky personality to match his new lease on life. Thank you for sponsoring Dempsey!

2024 Updates

November 2024

Dempsey may not be a lap cat, but he’s always close by, following his mom Amanda around the apartment, and curls up beside her or against her legs at night. Lately, Dempsey loves lounging on the hardwood floors or kitchen tiles and has found a cozy, new napping spot behind the curtains. His curiosity was on display during a recent cabin retreat in the woods, where he busied himself trying to catch butterflies and bugs on the porch! Donnie, now called Loki, has truly made himself at home with his family. They report that his favorite spot is their bed, where he loves to birdwatch. Thanks to his fur sister, Lyric, Loki now enjoys a favorite pastime of chasing after her. “He’s the little king of our house,” his parents shared. Loki also has a big appetite, especially for salmon, and he continues to bring endless joy and love to everyone around him.

June 2024

Dempsey just celebrated his 14^th birthday, and his family made sure it was special. “I gave him a little salmon as a treat and he loved it!” said mom Amanda. His family thinks he’s aging handsomely, and they appreciate all his quirks: “His name is very fitting to his personality,” she added. “Dempsey always looks grumpy, he loves napping, and he’s always looking for his next meal!”

February 2024

Dempsey was a good boy while mom Amanda was out of town recently, which helped soothe her nervousness about leaving him. Medically, Dempsey is doing much better and is no longer the picky eater he used to be. Amanda added, “Dempsey has also gotten much more vocal and now likes to chit chat. If he has an opinion, he makes sure to let you know. So cute!”

Dempsey has settled into his new home well and rediscovered his appetite. According to mom Amanda, “Dempsey is no longer as picky with his food and has the pooch to show for it!” She found him a new play tunnel that is just his size, which he loves. “It’s been nice watching him get more comfortable,” she added. “Just looking at him enjoy his retirement years makes me happy!”

Introducing Dempsey! Dempsey was originally abandoned at our Adoption Center as a kitten and quickly adopted, but returned after 12 years because the owners were moving and Dempsey was having some medical issues. As Dempsey recovered from entropion repair surgery and was treated for hyperthyroid disease and asthma, he became everyone’s favorite lap cat. He was later adopted and returned again due to an illness in the home. Through all the hardship and a second surgery for his entropion, Dempsey maintained his happy-go-lucky personality and won the heart of a family he can count on, in addition to the support of the Pet Sponsorship program.
