Getting my dog back.

Due to time constraints, I had to give my dog to a foster/adoption organization. However, less than a few hours after giving him up, I contacted the agency to see if I could get my dog back, but they said no. When they came to pick up my dog, they did not provide me with any paperwork to confirm the exchange. I asked them again if I could get my dog back because I realized I had made a mistake in giving him up. Now, the organization has been harassing me and threatening me, claiming that I abandoned my dog, which I did not. The dog was very well taken care of—he was neutered, groomed every two weeks, and had all his vaccinations. He was also already microchipped and had all his belongings. The only reason I gave him up was because of my schedule.

People who believe that their animal is being wrongfully withheld can commence a civil lawsuit to try to get the animal returned. Time is of the essence. I suggest attorney representation. I cannot predict the outcome of any given case but people who surrender their animal generally have no further rights to that animal and the shelter/rescue/person to whom the animal was surrendered generally has no legal obligation to return the animal.

I hope that everyone involved considers the best interests of this dog who should have a loving, stable, and forever home. Dogs need love and attention. Before adopting or purchasing an animal, people should consider if they can make the commitment to provide for the animal’s needs, keeping in mind that life is not stagnant and schedules are likely to change. It can be traumatic for an animal (a family member) to be rehomed. The decision to rehome should be very carefully considered before doing so.
