A Lifeline for Puerto Rico’s Homeless Animals

///A Lifeline for Puerto Rico’s Homeless Animals

As Hurricane Ernesto was making its way to Puerto Rico, we acted swiftly to assist our long-time rescue partners on the island. After the tropical storm hit the island, our Rescue Team continued their efforts to help in any way possible.

In preparation, we helped transport cats and kittens so the rescuers could make much-needed space to care for pets displaced by the oncoming storm. After the high winds and rain left shelters flooded and without power, we worked with PRoud Rescuers and Save a Gato to bring even more kittens, as well as puppies to safety. The organization Flight Angels was also crucial in helping with these rescue efforts. They pair airline passengers traveling from Puerto Rico to the states with puppies that fly as carry-on.

We are honored to stand with our Puerto Rican rescue partners year-round, offering hope and a fresh start to abandoned dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. The Humane Society of Puerto Rico estimates that the homeless animal population on the island has surpassed a million cats and half a million dogs, with a euthanasia rate estimated to be between 94 and 96 percent. Our rescue partners in Puerto Rico are working tirelessly to avoid placing animals in the already overcrowded municipal shelters. As Karla Scaramuzzo, Animal League America’s Senior Rescue Manager, explained, “For the majority of animals who end up in a shelter there, it will be a death sentence.”

Even after the storm recovery efforts are complete, the situation for homeless animals in Puerto Rico remains dire. We are committed to continuing our support for our partners in any way we can. Thankfully, our most recent four-legged arrivals are now safe and will soon embark on the final stop of their long journey: a loving home.
