Question
My friend passed away unexpectedly out of state. How can I go about getting his dog that I promised I would always take care of something happened to him?
Answer
Rights to the dog would depend on whether your friend had a will or trust which included a provision bequeathing the dog to you or someone else. If there was no such provision or a person dies intestate (without a will), next of kin should be contacted as they would normally be entitled to the decedent’s property and animals. They might be willing to give you the dog. I hope this all works out well for the dog!
