Animal control took my cats and won’t return them.

////Animal control took my cats and won’t return them.

Question

I called Animal control because I'm disabled and couldn't get my pets to the vet. The building I live in wouldn't spray for a major flee swarm and my kitties were being eaten alive. Now they say I can't have them back. Please let me know how I can get them back. They are my service cats in training. But more so I miss them so much. I'm so broken 💔

Answer

People who believe that their animals are being wrongfully withheld can commence a civil lawsuit to try to get the animals returned. The police can also be contacted although the police do not usually intervene in animal custody disputes.

People who surrender animals to animal control often have no further rights to those animals so it is important to review what agreement was signed, if any. If there is evidence that animal control agreed to get the cats veterinary care and return them to you, evidence of that should be on hand. Consider that cats who are treated for fleas but then returned to an environment with a flea infestation will be bitten by the fleas again. Returning cats to such an environment would be inhumane.
