I need help. My dog was stolen from me.

Question

I need help with retrieving a dog that was stolen from me. The courts dropped the case without locating the dog. What can I do?

Answer

I sense there is much more to this story since the court dropped the case, but you may wish to consult with an attorney in your state who can review the court’s decision and your paperwork (proof of ownership and proof that the animal was stolen). The attorney can advise you on possible next steps. Additionally, the police will sometimes get involved in pet theft cases including, for example, arresting an alleged thief, if there is probable cause to do so. In the course of an arrest or during the case, the whereabouts of the animal may become known.
