Question
Can animal control make you pay a fee to have your ESA registered dog returned to you?
Answer
While there are laws to prevent discrimination in housing against people who have emotional support animals, people whose animals are impounded typically must pay an impound fee to retrieve their animals, including emotional support animals. Time is of the essence. After the expiration of the legal hold time (usually just a few days), shelters/animal control generally have the right to rehome animals who were not retrieved by their “parents.”
