Shelter said the dog we adopted was a different breed.

Question

We adopted a dog from a non-profit. It’s not even close to the breed they told us. We have spent thousands on training because we have a 3 year old in the house. Turns out the dog is mostly a Pitt Bull after doing a DNA test.

Answer

Rights of adopters and shelters are generally contained in an adoption agreement. It is difficult to know with precision the breeds in a mixed-breed dog just by observing the dog. Shelters do not typically do DNA tests (and their reliability is not 100 percent). I cannot predict the outcome of any given case but I doubt that a shelter would or should be held liable under the circumstances you described. I hope this all works out well for the dog and your family.
