In the face of a significant winter storm, our rescue team was determined to bring pregnant tabby Kerrianne to the safety of North Shore Animal League America.
Disturbingly, this was not Kerrianne’s first pregnancy. We learned she suffered a difficult delivery the first time; and even after that hardship, she was never spayed. Our Rescue Team moved quickly to coordinate Kerrianne’s safe transport to us through the snow.
This brave mother had an exceedingly large litter – 12 kittens, but sadly four of them perished. Momma and her litter are recovering in our nursery and receiving our first-rate care. And we can assure Kerrianne that she will never go through anything like that again. Keeping the animals we love healthy and safe includes the responsible step of spaying and neutering. “Kerrianne is lucky to be alive,” says Sylvia Ottaka, Animal League America Senior Director of Rescue & Community Outreach. “Her situation could have been avoided. But despite all that she’s lost…her home, her kittens…Kerrianne is still so friendly and loving.”
In addition to helping reduce the homeless pet population, spaying and neutering provides a host of health benefits. Spaying female pets can eliminate the risk of uterine cancer and greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer. Neutering male pets can make them less likely to roam, spray, or fight, prevents testicular cancer, and reduces the risk of prostate cancer.
