Dexter’s journey began nearly a decade ago when he was just a playful puppy, adopted from North Shore Animal League America into what was supposed to be his forever home. But when his family went through a divorce, Dexter was cast aside — left at a shelter in New Jersey, alone and confused.
The shelter reached out to us after discovering his origins, and without hesitation, we set out to bring him home. One of our devoted staff members drove three hours each way to rescue him — because once an animal comes through our doors, they are always part of the North Shore Animal League America family.
Now, Dexter is safe with us, but the transition hasn’t been easy. This sweet, trusting terrier mix — his silver muzzle a testament to years of love and loyalty — struggles with the kennel environment. With his irresistible crooked smile and playful spirit, he charms all the humans around him, but prefers the company of people over other dogs. Despite everything he’s been through, Dexter remains hopeful, ready to love again.
Dexter’s story is an important reminder that pets are for life and the responsibility we have to our animals should never waver. Before welcoming a pet into your home, consider what would happen if your circumstances should change. No animal should ever be left behind.
Senior dogs like Dexter have so much love left to give, and we are determined to find him the devoted home he deserves — one that will never let him go again.
