Helping Hearts Heal
For Saarah Shahid, volunteering at North Shore Animal League America was a natural step, inspired by a lifelong connection to animals. “I’ve always felt a special connection to animals, and I’ve wanted to help them in any way I can,” she shared.

Just under a year into her time at Animal League America, Saarah has already made a meaningful impact. From assisting with rescues to ensuring the animals have a clean, safe space to thrive, she plays an important role in helping both pets and people. “My favorite part is seeing an animal gain trust and open up, especially after all they’ve been through. It’s a reminder of the love, kindness and patience that everyone at the organization shows.”
One moment that left a lasting impression came on her first day, when she met Max, an 11-year-old orange tabby who had recently lost his owner. “I remember sitting in BFF, reading his story, and feeling so emotional,” she recalled. “It helped me realize that while many of these animals come from sad backgrounds, our role is to give them the love and care they deserve.” Max was soon adopted by a loving family — a moment that reinforced why she volunteers.

Whether it’s helping a shy cat blossom or guiding an adopter toward their new best friend, Saarah finds purpose in every shift. “It’s like I can see both the human and the animal’s eyes light up with joy — it’s such a beautiful moment.”
Dorit Shevach-Shani, Senior Feline Behavior Manager, shared, “Saarah’s gentle approach and genuine compassion make such a difference for our cats. She brings patience, care and a positive energy to her work here, and we’re so lucky to have her as part of our team.”

For Saarah, volunteering at North Shore Animal League America has been a learning experience, too. “I’ve learned that even the shyest cats can come out of their shells with the right environment and care,” she said. “The work we do here really changes lives.” Thank you, Saarah, for helping our animals heal and find the second chances they deserve!
