Donor Impact Report 20242024-10-23T09:08:29-04:00

Catalyzed by donor support, North Shore Animal League America has been at the forefront of the no-kill movement for eight decades. The largest and longest-running no-kill animal rescue and adoption facility in the world, we use our mission of Rescue, Nurture, Adopt and Educate to enact transformative impact — thanks to your generosity.

Answering the Call for Help

Your contributions enable us to rescue animals in dire circumstances across the country. North Shore Animal League America founded the practice of humane relocation, which is now the model for animal rescue organizations everywhere. We utilize our Mobile Rescue Units to relocate pets from overcrowded municipal shelters — where they would be destroyed — to our Port Washington, NY campus. Our impact is growing with the addition of new rescue partners, reaching homeless animals far and wide, in the most challenging situations.

Since 2015, our North Country Initiative (NCI) Adirondack Cat Adoption Center has been making a significant impact on feral cat overpopulation in the Adirondack region. With a focus on spay/neuter, NCI is the only resource of its kind in the area, and helps manage feral colonies, provide medical care and behavior rehabilitation, and find homes for cats determined to be adoptable.

Providing Hope and Healing

Our AAHA-accredited Pet Health Centers provide high-quality treatment and rehabilitation. We treated 1,175 animals suffering from extremely dangerous conditions; requiring a total of 17,176 days of hospitalization in our Freed Special Recovery Center. Throughout 2023, 119 of our dedicated foster parents helped save 162 precious animals.

Creating New Families

We are a world leader in setting best practices for adoption. In 2023, we facilitated tens of thousands of adoptions working with our network over 2,000 shelter partners. Our renovated Feline Behavior & Long-Term Care Home, located on our main campus, is a place where cats with specialized needs can receive support. Our Bayles House provides respite for canines who need quiet to recover after a surgical procedure or following their rescue from traumatic circumstances.

Fostering Empathy for a No-Kill World

Through workshops, outreach programs, and community engagement, the Mutt-i-grees® Curriculum fosters a culture of compassion and responsibility, teaching future generations the values of kindness and empathy for all living beings. Launched in 2010, the Curriculum program was developed in partnership with Yale University’s School of the 21st Century and now reaches around the world. The Curriculum focuses on the plight of homeless animals and the importance of adoption to bridge humane education with social emotional learning. North Shore Animal League America is the only animal rescue and adoption organization to offer a structured educational program for children, which we believe is the intellectual path to a no-kill future.
