Hundreds of excited animal lovers lined the sidewalks and walkways of North Shore Animal League America’s Port Washington, N.Y., campus on the morning of Saturday, May 6, for the kickoff of our 23rd annual Global Pet Adoptathon™, sponsored by our friends at Purina. With more than 700 homeless animals of all shapes, sizes, breeds, and ages just waiting to find responsible, loving homes — and with so many people looking to add new four-legged family members to their lives — the weekend was a glorious celebration of life and second chances.
Our 36-hour kickoff event — which ran through 9 p.m. Sunday night and helped find homes for 490 lucky dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens — was just the start of something even bigger and more powerful. For the entire month of May, our Global Pet Adoptathon continued, helping match thousands of homeless pets with happy adopters across the country and around the world. More than 2,000 animal welfare organizations participated in this lifesaving effort, including more than 30 worldwide — from Japan and Australia to China and South Africa.
Our dedicated shelter and rescue partners worked tirelessly to promote, organize, and support this collective effort, turning their cities, hometowns, and villages into safe havens where Mutt-i-grees® could finally get a chance to find responsible, loving homes.
